On March 26, 2011, Alamo Heights High School senior and point guard Eddie Moreno, Jr. was shot in a tragic road rage incident. Like any other high school senior, he was looking forward to graduation, and starting college in the fall to become a basketball coach. In an instant, his world as he knew it was forever changed. The bullet that pierced his left cheek lodged in his spinal canal at level C2/C3. Eddie is ventilator dependent and has no movement from the neck down. The doctors say he'll never walk again, but we know, and he believes, he will. The doctors also said Eddie wouldn't survive, but he is still here with us. He is fighting every day. He truly amazes us! "With God All Things Are Possible".
He sometimes wonders "why me", as we all do. We don't understand. Eddie did everything he was told to do: go to school, get good grades, stay out and away from gangs. He made all the right decisions, and is a role model for his younger brothers. He misses spending time with his younger brothers. They would wrestle, play XBOX, play basketball, and go cruising in his car to get dinner at Whataburger.
Ever since Eddie was 5 years old, he was active in sports, playing football, or basketball. Now to not be able to do anything for himself, is painfully tragic. We know he has a long and difficult road to recovery. There will be good days, and bad days, but with support, the journey will be much smoother. Eddie’s D
ad and Mom are glad they sent Eddie to Alamo Heights ISD, where they have all made friends. The Moreno family whishes to thank AHISD friends, family, the community, all “Home Makeover” participants, and the volunteers for their love, prayers, and support. They ask that we continue to lift them up in prayer, especially Eddie Moreno, Jr.
And the story continues….out of this tragedy many great and wonderful things have occurred. Once the news broke, everyone rallied to meet the immediate needs through fundraisers and raffles. But in contemplating Eddie’s long-term needs, the house could not be “fixed” to accommodate Eddie’s wheelchair or oxygen needs, and it had to be completely renovated. In fact, you might call it, “Extreme Makeover San Antonio Style.” Professionals, vendors, suppliers, skilled and unskilled labor, family, friends, and neighbors have all given sacrificially of their time, talent, expertise and resources. The Design Team incorporated elements of “Universal Design” so that the Moreno home is livable for everyone, especially Eddie. “Team Eddie” was born and fueled by his determined words, “Bring It On.”
This website is dedicated to Eddie Moreno, Jr. and his entire family. We also honor the exceeding generosity of those who have donated so much in an effort to bring Eddie home.
Welcome to “Eddie’s Courage”!
